What is a Sleep Study?
A sleep study is a test that records a person’s bodily activities while he, or she, is sleeping. Today, a sleep study is a whole lot easier than it used to be.
For many years, the standard sleep test (called a "polysomnography") required the patient go to a "Sleep Lab" where technicians used adhesive to apply more than a dozen uncomfortable metal electrodes to the forehead, scalp and body. In addition, you are videotaped while sleeping as a technician monitors the sensor signals overnight.
However, technology has advanced that sleep testing devices are now so simple and safe to use that a sleep study can be conducted in the privacy and comfort of your own bed (without a technician staring at you all night). The self-testing device is sent directly to your home (or, office). These devices have been clinically proven (with the FDA) to be as accurate in diagnosing the most common form of Sleep Apnea, called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Instead of trying to sleep in a strange "sleep laboratory", you put on simple-to-use sensors that measure your breathing, oxygen level, pulse rate, chest movement and snoring (if any). The recording device sits conveniently on your nightstand. You will be provided orientation materials and all the personal (and private) assistance you need to make your sleep study go smoothly.
The data collected while you are sleeping is then analyzed and a report is generated for physician review. It's that easy!
