What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
A chronic condition where the air passage in the throat becomes blocked during sleep. Often caused by a relaxed soft palate (which is also associated with snoring), the blockage prevents air from entering the lungs for as much as a minute, or even longer.
More importantly, the blockage is repeated again and again throughout the night - as much as over a hundred times every hour!
The Dangers of Sleep Apnea
While people with OSA sleep, their body may be struggling for air and they won't even know it. As a result, they never achieve the important deep, restful sleep so necessary to good health. Patients never feel refreshed and are often tired throughout the day.
Even worse, the stress on the body and decreased oxygen levels in the blood may cause high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attack or stroke. The National Commission on Sleep Disorders attributes 38,000 cardiovascular deaths a year to sleep apnea.
